What I have learned about volunteering.
All the “giants” in my life who are volunteer bigwigs are anything but volunteer bigwigs in their own eyes.
All the volunteer bigwigs have learned a fundamental truth to being a volunteer. They have gotten over themselves.
Their hearts have been opened up to the plight of someone else. They know the secret of compassion is entering into the suffering of others. They love their neighbors as much if not more than they love themselves. All their work comes from the well spring of their heart – the love of Christ.
Volunteering is something they do, not something they should do.
These bigwigs have been compelled to volunteer because they have been transformed by a change that starts at the core of who they are and affect every decision, every relationship and every response.
They have gotten over their fears, insecurities, schedules, pride, and hurt. These have been scrubbed out of their hearts.
They live the words of a wise women who said, “If every woman believed what God has in store for her, every woman would devote her life to the service of God.”
They do not want to get to heaven and see what they could have been a part of, but missed because they were numb or selfish or scared.
I witness these “bigwigs” and understand that by the way they step into His story, by accomplishing the work God has given them to do, they are glorifying God.
They are trusting that God’s going to help them navigate whatever is ahead for their anchor of hope that’s embedded in the bedrock of faith.
They have taken to heart the message of Luke 14 where Christ said, “So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.” Or as Jennie Allen states it, “if you are not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people and kiss it goodby, you can’t be my disciple.”
In her book Anything, Jennie Allen says that “Every day little gods compete for our primary affections. Yet God clearly says first and foremost, ‘Have no other gods before me.’” (Ex 20:3).
My so-called volunteer bigwigs ,who are just people like you or I, have laid claim to that commandment and have laid down their “everything”.
They have gotten over themselves.
